Welcome to Year 2 Bluebells!

Year 2 is a fun and exciting year and I love to see how much the children grow throughout their final year in Key Stage 1. The children will have opportunities to explore exciting and engaging lessons and experience a range of fun trips! Let’s meet the staff…

English

In English we will explore our learning through the Read Write Inc Literacy and Language scheme. Literacy and Language provides us with opportunities to experience reading different texts (fiction and non-fiction) and to plan and create our very own exciting writing pieces!

We will explore a variety of authors and stories during our class story time, some of the book which we will read are:

Phonics

The children will complete daily phonics sessions through our Read Write Inc phonics scheme. The children can log on to their personal Oxford Owl login to read their weekly phonics book containing their focused sounds to an adult at home.

Maths

In Maths we will explore of our learning through White Rose and Mastery Number lessons. The children will have opportunities to be taught Maths using various teaching methods and resources to support their learning as well as experience problem-solving activities. Their Maths lessons will allow them to explore Maths using concrete, pictorial and abstract resources to deepen their understanding.

Homework

Year 2 will receive homework every week on a Wednesday and it is due in the following Monday.

Each week, children will have spellings to practise and either a Maths or Literacy activity (this will alternate each week). Children will also have their own Numbots login to practise each week. NumBots is all about every child achieving the “triple win” of understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction.

Reading books: Children are also expected to read to an adult at home regularly and their reading diaries should be signed weekly by an adult. Reading books will be changed every Monday.

Science

In Science, the children will be taught biology, chemistry and physics lessons. We will be exploring different topics such as Animals Including Humans, Uses of Everyday Materials and Plants. We will also be 'working scientifically' asking and investigating answers to a variety of questions.  

History

In History, we will be travelling through time in the Autumn term learning about great explorers such as John Cabot, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. In the Spring term we will be learning all about Queen Victoria and how Britain changed during her rein. For our final term we will be learning all about significant individuals who changed Britain such as Emily Davison and Florence Nightingale.

 

Geography

In Geography, we will start the year learning all about the 7 continents and 5 oceans that make up our world. We will explore hot and cold places, looking at their location in relation to the North Pole, South Pole and equator. We will move on to looking at how the weather changes throughout the year, looking at seasons, weather patterns and locations. We will end the year with learning all about what it is like to live in Tanzania and compare it to where we live.

PE

In PE the children will have the opportunity to explore a series of lessons focusing on fundamental skills, gymnastics, dance, athletics and games which consists of ball skills and team games. Our PE lessons are on a Monday and a Thursday.

Trips!

In Year 2, we have the opportunity to participate in lots of fun, exciting and engaging trips such as the Christmas pantomime where the children can experience a live theatre performance, an overnight residential trip to Fox Howl and a fun end of year trip to celebrate our final year of infants!
