Welcome to Year 6

Your teacher is Mrs Oakes and our teaching assistant is Mrs Grace. Miss Thistlewood or Miss Ritchie also teach the class on a Wednesday.

Our daily Literacy Lessons are based on the Literacy and Language Programme, however we also explore other exciting books such as: A Christmas Carol, Everest and Kensuke’s Kingdom. Reading is important and is a skill that can open up opportunities across the curriculum and enable pupils to find out about the world. Reading is a priority at our school and we want our children and families to foster a love of reading.

We will be completing lots of reading tasks in school but reading at home can support the children and is something parents can do to help make excellent progress across the curriculum. Reading diaries will be checked on a Wednesday, please ensure they are signed at least once a week.

Our daily maths lessons encompass the entire maths curriculum, with new learning particularly in Fractions, Decimals, Percentages and Ratio.  We will also explore long multiplication and division, all of these areas require a good understanding and knowledge of multiplication and division facts so children should be practising regularly on Times Tables Rockstars.

As geographers, we will be exploring time zones, earthquakes and coasts. We will metaphorically venture around the world to discover the impact of these subject areas. As historians, we’ll be stepping back in time to discover facts about World War I, The Vikings and World War 2. We will have a specific focus on how WW2 affected our local area.

In Year 6, children sit their SATs, which are the statutory assessments all Year 6 children in England complete. These tests are important, but we don't want anybody to worry about them; we will be prepared and ready when they start in May. We ask that children are not absent during SAT's week.

Our homework is set on a Wednesday, (this will be spellings, TT Rockstars, Literacy and Maths) and will be due back in school on a Monday. Children should read at home at least 3 times a week.

In the first half-term our PE consists of Swimming (Tuesday) and outdoor PE, weather permitting (Thursday). For the rest of the year, PE will either be indoor or outdoor and will take place on (Tuesday and Thursday)
